Opening Statement

I am currently employed as Web Graphics design lead at a data visualisation company based in Shropshire after graduating the University of Liverpool with a degree in Architecture, with a focus on Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD).

I have worked freelance as a web designer for several years and have gained experience in both UI and UX design. I love to solve problems and find the best and most innovative solution to design requirements.

Design Statistics

Although classically trained in art techniques such as sketching, painting and sculpture, a large proportion of my time and design work is based around using various computer programs to create my web-based and print designs.

Check out the infographic below to learn more about how my time is often divided up between the different disciplines of PC-based design.

  • Web Graphics, Photo Editing & Manipulation
    GiMP & Adobe
  • Photoshop Vector Illustration
    Inkscape & Adobe Illustrator
  • Front-End Design, UI & UX
Visual Studio, Dreamweaver, Github, Atom, HTML5 & CSS3
  • Front-End Development
    Javascript, jQuery & WordPress
  • 3D CAAD Modelling
    Trimble Sketchup & Google Earth

I have always been creative, growing up I dreamt of being an illustrator like Quentin Blake. I am lucky enough to be employed in a job that I love – and I’d love to share some of my enjoyment for my work with you. See below for some of the places that I’ve been to gain my experience.

Founder (2004 – )

Squarefountain, though it has undergone several name changes, has been my personal vehicle for all my freelance design work for many years. I have been lucky enough to work on various design projects, as well as exploring new techniques and expanding my abilities on many self-driven exercises.

A number of highlights from Squarefountain history include:

Shropshire-based Data Visualisation Company
Web Graphic Design Lead (2009 – )

Being the creative lead at a company that regularly punches above it’s weight is a truly exciting experience. Specialising in web applications and dynamic data-driven interfaces, I have been in charge of delivering understandable and innovative user experiences and interface designs to a varied range of informative and socially interactive projects.

Noteworthy projects have included:

University of Liverpool
BA Architecture (2:1) (2006 – 2009)

Though it could be seen as a strange direction for a future web designer, I took my degree as an opportunity to use my art and design skills to solve problems in a 3D space, rather than the 2D space that I’m usually presented with on a website or poster design. Exploring the construction and design of buildings throughout history satisfied my love of architectural design and help influence my other creative works.

Particularly fulfulling moments include:

  • Winning the 2009 School of Architecture competition to design an exhibition space to represent Liverpool at the 2010 Shanghai Expo.
  • Receiving a 1st for my CAAD module, creating a virtual tour of the School of Architecture.
  • Completing various design scheme projects including a wildlife centre on the edge of the River Mersey created entirely from paper, or a centre for the visually impaired with an interactive light facade – capable of playing Tetris.

Mid-Cheshire College
Art & Design – BTEC Foundation Diploma (2004 – 2005)

After completing Art, I.C.T and Media Studies at A-level, this was my first experience in art-focused education. Although I was currently undecided as to the path that I wanted to take into the creative world, this course allowed me to broaden my skills in various disciplines including sketching, exhibition design and typography.

Highlights include:

  • Gaining a distinction for my Art History dissertation on the Globalisation of Mass Surrealism, a study of bizarre and surreal elements used in modern advertising.
  • Receiving a City & Guilds certificate in Life Drawing.
